CONFAST DE58 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What drill bit size do I need for a CONFAST double expansion anchor?
The hole is drilled considerably larger than the bolt, because the anchor body sits in the hole and the bolt threads into it. Bit sizes by anchor size: 1/4 inch anchor takes a 1/2 inch bit, 5/16 inch takes 5/8 inch, 3/8 inch takes 3/4 inch, 1/2 inch takes 7/8 inch, 5/8 inch takes 1 inch, and 3/4 inch takes a 1-1/4 inch bit. The outside anchor diameter matches the bit size in each case, so drill with a carbide bit sized to the anchor, not to the bolt.
2) How deep does the hole have to be and how long a bolt do I buy for a double expansion anchor?
Minimum embedment sets the hole depth: 1-3/8 inches for the 1/4 inch, 1-1/2 inches for the 5/16 inch, 2 inches for the 3/8 inch, 2-1/2 inches for the 1/2 inch, 2-5/8 inches for the 5/8 inch, and 3-15/16 inches for the 3/4 inch anchor. Bolt length is fixture thickness plus embedment depth. Drill a bit deeper than the minimum to leave room for dust.
3) What bolt thread does the CONFAST double expansion anchor accept?
It is a female anchor, so you supply a standard UNC machine bolt. Threads are 1/4-20, 5/16-18, 3/8-16, 1/2-13 and 3/4-10 to match the anchor size. Inside anchor diameter equals the bolt diameter in every size, so a 3/8 inch anchor takes a 3/8-16 bolt.
4) How close to the edge of a concrete slab can I set these anchors?
Minimum edge distance is large on a double expansion anchor because expansion pressure can spall a slab edge: 2-1/2 inches for the 1/4 inch, 3-1/8 inches for the 5/16 inch, 3-3/4 inches for the 3/8 inch, 4-3/8 inches for the 1/2 inch, 5 inches for the 5/8 inch, and 6-1/4 inches for the 3/4 inch. Minimum spacing between anchors is roughly double that: 5 inches for the 1/4 inch and 12-1/2 inches for the 3/4 inch. If your layout is tighter than that, this is the wrong anchor for the location.
5) How much load will a 1/2 inch double expansion anchor hold?
Pull-out values run 532 lbs for the 1/4 inch, 847 lbs for the 5/16 inch, 1,023 lbs for the 3/8 inch, 1,942 lbs for the 1/2 inch, 3,217 lbs for the 5/8 inch, and 4,487 lbs for the 3/4 inch. Those are ultimate pull-out figures in concrete, not working loads, so apply your own safety factor when sizing for a fixture.
6) Should I use a double expansion anchor or a single expansion anchor in block?
A double expansion anchor expands along its full length from both ends, which is what you want in softer or lower strength base material such as block, brick and weaker concrete, where a single expansion anchor only grips over a short section and can spin in the hole. In sound, high strength concrete a single expansion anchor is usually enough. The CONFAST DE is the double version, made from Zamac.
7) Can these anchors be used in a damp area like a parking garage or mechanical room?
The CONFAST DE anchors carry a Moist location rating, so damp interior and sheltered areas such as mechanical rooms, wash-down areas and parking structures are within scope. The body is Zamac, a zinc alloy, so avoid direct saltwater exposure or submerged use and avoid pairing with dissimilar metals that would drive galvanic corrosion.
8) How big does the hole in my fixture need to be to bolt through into the anchor?
It depends on how you set it. If the anchor is installed first and the fixture placed over it (in place), the fixture hole needs to be larger: 9/16 inch for the 1/4 inch anchor, 3/4 inch for the 5/16, 7/8 inch for the 3/8, 1 inch for the 1/2, 1-1/8 inches for the 5/8, and 1-3/8 inches for the 3/4. If you spot the hole through the fixture, the fixture hole only needs to match the bolt diameter, so 1/4 inch through 3/4 inch.
9) How many CONFAST double expansion anchors come in a box?
Box quantity drops as the anchor gets larger: 100 for the 1/4 inch, 50 for the 5/16 inch, 25 for the 3/8 inch, 20 for the 1/2 inch, and 10 for both the 5/8 inch and 3/4 inch. Anchors are sold by the box, so order in those increments when stocking a crib or a job trailer.
10) Can a double expansion anchor be removed later or reused?
The bolt comes out, the anchor does not. Backing the bolt out lets you lift the fixture and re-bolt to the same anchor later, which makes these useful for equipment that gets serviced or swapped. The anchor body itself stays expanded in the hole permanently; it cannot be pulled and reset in a new location.
