CONFAST MS8 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What size drill bit do I need for a CONFAST machine screw anchor?
The bit is larger than the bolt because the anchor body goes in the hole, not the screw. Drill 5/16 inch for #8-32, 3/8 inch for #10-24, 1/2 inch for 1/4 inch, 5/8 inch for 5/16 inch, 3/4 inch for 3/8 inch, 7/8 inch for 1/2 inch, 1-1/8 inch for 5/8 inch, and 1-1/4 inch for 3/4 inch. Each bit size matches the outside diameter of that anchor.
2) How deep does the hole have to be for a machine screw anchor in concrete?
Drill at least to the minimum embedment for the size you are using: 1/2 inch for #8-32, 5/8 inch for #10-24, 7/8 inch for 1/4 inch, 1 inch for 5/16 inch, 1-1/4 inch for 3/8 inch, 1-1/2 inch for 1/2 inch, 1-3/4 inch for 5/8 inch, and 2-1/4 inch for 3/4 inch. Drill a little deeper than that so dust and cuttings have somewhere to go.
3) How long a machine screw do I need with these anchors?
Bolt length is your fixture thickness plus the embedment depth. Do not run the screw deeper than the anchor's internal thread length, which runs 13/32 inch on #8-32, 15/32 inch on #10-24, 19/32 inch on 1/4 inch, 3/4 inch on 5/16 inch, 1 inch on 3/8 inch, 1-1/8 inch on 1/2 inch, 1-1/2 inch on 5/8 inch, and 1-5/8 inch on 3/4 inch. Bottoming out the screw can spin or crack the anchor.
4) What thread size bolt goes into a CONFAST MS anchor?
The anchor is female threaded, so you supply a standard machine screw or bolt to match. Threads are 1/4-20, 5/16-18, 3/8-16, 1/2-13 and 3/4-10 on the fractional sizes, and #8-32 and #10-24 on the two machine screw sizes. That means off-the-shelf UNC hardware threads straight in.
5) How much weight will a 3/8 inch machine screw anchor in concrete hold?
Published pull-out values are 251 lbs for #8-32, 573 lbs for #10-24, 879 lbs for 1/4 inch, 1,177 lbs for 5/16 inch, 1,488 lbs for 3/8 inch, 2,096 lbs for 1/2 inch, 2,132 lbs for 5/8 inch, and 2,310 lbs for 3/4 inch. These are ultimate pull-out figures, not working loads, so apply your own safety factor when you size for equipment or racking.
6) How tight can I torque a machine screw anchor?
15 in. lbs. maximum. Zamac is a zinc alloy, not steel, so it strips well before a steel anchor would. Snug the fixture down with a hand driver rather than an impact gun.
7) How far from a concrete edge and from each other can these anchors be set?
Minimum edge distance runs from 1-9/16 inch on #8-32 up to 6-1/4 inch on 3/4 inch (2-1/2 inch on 1/4 inch, 3-3/4 inch on 3/8 inch, 4-3/8 inch on 1/2 inch). Minimum spacing between anchors is 5 inch for 1/4 inch, 7-1/2 inch for 3/8 inch, 8-3/4 inch for 1/2 inch, 11-1/4 inch for 5/8 inch and 12-1/2 inch for 3/4 inch. Set closer than that and you risk spalling the slab out rather than developing the anchor.
8) What hole size do I need in my fixture or bracket?
Two cases. If you drill the concrete through the fixture (hole spotted), the fixture hole only needs to clear the bolt: #8, #10, 1/4, 5/16, 3/8, 1/2, 5/8 or 3/4 inch. If you set the anchor first and drop the fixture over it (in place), the hole has to clear the anchor's set tool path, so it needs to be larger: 3/8 inch for #8-32, 7/16 inch for #10-24, 9/16 inch for 1/4 inch, 3/4 inch for 5/16 inch, 7/8 inch for 3/8 inch, 1 inch for 1/2 inch, 1-1/4 inch for 5/8 inch and 1-3/8 inch for 3/4 inch.
9) Can these anchors be used in damp locations, like a parking garage slab or mechanical room floor?
The CONFAST MS anchor carries a moist location rating, so damp interior slabs, mechanical rooms and similar conditions are within its intended use. It is a Zamac zinc alloy body, which is not the choice for direct exterior exposure or corrosive wash-down areas.
10) Why would I use a machine screw anchor instead of a wedge anchor or a sleeve anchor?
Because it is female. The anchor sets flush in the slab and the bolt goes in afterward, so a fixture can be removed and re-mounted repeatedly without disturbing the anchor, and nothing protrudes when the bolt is out. That is what makes it the usual pick for overhead pipe hangers, electrical and mechanical equipment mounts, and any bracket that gets serviced. A wedge anchor, with its stud sticking up, is the better choice for a one-time structural attachment and higher load in the same hole diameter.
11) Can I use these anchors in concrete block as well as poured concrete?
Yes. The MS anchor is rated for concrete, block and other solid masonry base materials. Set it in the solid web of the block, not the hollow cell, and respect the edge distance for the size you are using, which starts at 1-9/16 inch on #8-32.
12) How many anchors come in a box of CONFAST machine screw anchors?
Box quantity drops as the size goes up: 100 each for #8-32, #10-24, 1/4 inch and 5/16 inch, 50 for 3/8 inch, 50 for 1/2 inch, and 10 each for 5/8 inch and 3/4 inch. Useful to know if you are stocking a maintenance shop and want one box to cover a run of hanger drops.
