CONFAST WA38214A – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What size drill bit do I use for a CONFAST wedge anchor?
With a wedge anchor the bit size matches the anchor diameter, and CONFAST lists it that way: a 1/4 inch anchor takes a 1/4 inch bit, 3/8 takes 3/8, 1/2 takes 1/2, 5/8 takes 5/8, 3/4 takes 3/4, and the 1 inch and 1-1/4 inch anchors take 1 inch and 1-1/4 inch bits. Drill with a carbide bit in concrete only.
2) Can I use these wedge anchors in block, brick or mortar?
No. CONFAST rates these wedge anchors for concrete only, so hollow or grouted block, brick and mortar joints are out. In those substrates use a sleeve anchor or a screw anchor rated for masonry instead.
3) How long an anchor do I need for a 1/2 inch thick base plate on a concrete slab?
Add your fixture thickness to the minimum embedment and leave room for the nut and washer. For 1/2 inch diameter CONFAST anchors the minimum embedment is 2-1/4 inches, and the size chart gives the max fixture thickness each length supports: the 1/2 x 2-3/4 handles 1/8 inch of fixture, 1/2 x 3-3/4 handles 1 inch, 1/2 x 4-1/4 handles 1-1/2 inches. So for a 1/2 inch plate the 1/2 x 3-3/4 is the working choice.
4) How close to the edge of a concrete slab can I set a 1/2 inch wedge anchor?
Minimum edge distance on the 1/2 inch CONFAST anchor is 2-1/2 inches, with 5 inch minimum spacing between anchors. Other diameters: 1-1/4 inch edge distance on 1/4 inch anchors, 1-7/8 inch on 3/8, 3-1/8 inch on 5/8, 3-3/4 inch on 3/4, 5 inch on 1 inch, and 6-1/4 inch on 1-1/4 inch. Set closer than that and you risk spalling the edge as the wedge expands.
5) How much torque should I put on a CONFAST wedge anchor when tightening the nut?
Torque by diameter: 5 to 10 ft-lbs on 1/4 inch, 25 to 30 on 3/8, 50 to 60 on 1/2, 75 to 90 on 5/8, 150 to 175 on 3/4, 250 to 300 on 1 inch, and 400 to 450 on 1-1/4 inch. Overtorquing can strip the cone out of the hole, so a torque wrench is worth using on the larger diameters.
6) Can I drill the hole through the fixture already in place, or does the fixture have to come off?
Either way works, but the hole in the fixture has to be bigger if you drill through it in place, because the anchor's expansion clip needs clearance. On a 1/2 inch anchor the fixture hole needs 1/2 inch if you spot the hole and remove the fixture, or 5/8 inch if you set the anchor through the fixture in place. Same pattern across sizes: 1/4 versus 5/16 on a 1/4 inch anchor, 3/8 versus 1/2 on a 3/8, 5/8 versus 7/8 on a 5/8, 3/4 versus 1 inch on a 3/4, and 1 inch versus 1-1/4 on a 1 inch anchor.
7) Are zinc-plated wedge anchors OK outdoors or in a wet environment?
CONFAST rates this zinc-plated anchor for dry locations. The zinc plating resists surface corrosion during storage and normal jobsite use, but for exterior, damp or coastal work you want a stainless or hot-dip galvanized wedge anchor instead.
8) What wrench or socket size fits the nut on these concrete anchors?
Nut sizes run 7/16 inch on the 1/4 inch anchor, 9/16 on 3/8, 3/4 on 1/2, 15/16 on 5/8, 1-1/8 on 3/4, 1-1/2 on 1 inch, and 1-7/8 on 1-1/4 inch. Worth checking before you head to the roof with only a 1/2 inch drive set.
9) What thread size are CONFAST wedge anchors so I can match nuts and threaded fittings?
They are UNC coarse threaded studs: 1/4-20, 3/8-16, 1/2-13, 3/4-10, 1-8, and 1-1/4-7. The projecting end is a male threaded stud, so any standard coarse nut, washer or threaded connector in that size will thread on.
10) What pull-out and shear values do CONFAST wedge anchors carry?
Published ultimate values by diameter: 1/4 inch at 877 lbs pull-out and 1082 lbs shear, 3/8 inch at 1223 and 3238, 1/2 inch at 2999 and 5564, 5/8 inch at 3749 and 6198, 3/4 inch at 4978 and 9378, 1 inch at 7329 and 17712, and 1-1/4 inch at 13162 and 24206. These are test values, not allowable design loads, so apply your own safety factor for a structural connection.
11) How many wedge anchors come in a box, and does it change by size?
Box quantity drops as the anchor gets bigger: 100 per box in 1/4 inch, 50 in 3/8 inch, 25 in 1/2 inch, 25 or 20 or 10 across the 5/8 inch lengths, 20 or 10 in 3/4 inch, 5 in the 1 inch sizes, and 5 or 4 in 1-1/4 inch. The quantity is shown with each size, for example 1/2 inch x 3-3/4 inch is a box of 25 and 3/4 inch x 12 inch is a box of 10.
12) What is the shortest 1/4 inch wedge anchor that will still hold in concrete?
1/4 inch CONFAST anchors need 1-1/8 inches of embedment, and the shortest length offered is 1/4 x 1-3/4 inch, which leaves 3/8 inch for the fixture. If your bracket is thicker than that, step up to 1/4 x 2-1/4 inch (7/8 inch fixture) or 1/4 x 3-1/4 inch (1-7/8 inch fixture).
13) Are CONFAST wedge anchors made in the USA for a Buy American job?
Country of origin on this line is the US. That is the fact we hold on record; for a federally funded project your submittal will still need the manufacturer's own documentation.
