CONFAST

Bolting plates and equipment to a dry concrete slab

Every anchor here is rated for dry locations. Start with the CONFAST Zinc-Plated Wedge Anchor for Concrete, made in the US, and pick a sleeve anchor where the head has to sit flush or domed.

  • Base is solid concrete: the wedge anchor is rated for concrete only, not block, brick or mortar.
  • The spot stays dry: each anchor here is rated for dry locations.
  • Length covers fixture thickness plus 2-1/4 inches into the concrete for a 1/2 inch wedge anchor.
  • Edge distance: a 1/2 inch wedge anchor needs 2-1/2 inches from the slab edge.

Anchoring in damp, wet or chemical-exposed concrete

Match the anchor's rating to the spot: the CONFAST Galvanized Wedge Anchor, Concrete Fastener is rated for damp locations, the 304 Stainless Steel anchors for wet, and the CONFAST 316 Stainless Steel Concrete Wedge Anchor for submerged and chemical exposure. For a flush or acorn-nut head in a wet spot, use the stainless sleeve anchors.

  • Confirm the rating covers the spot: damp, wet, or submerged and chemicals.
  • Wedge anchors here are rated for concrete only: no block, brick or mortar.
  • Stack only stainless nuts and washers on a stainless stud to avoid mixing metals.
  • Torque by diameter with a torque wrench, not an impact gun: 50 to 60 ft-lbs on 1/2 inch.

Hanging rod or equipment you will unbolt later

These anchors set flush with an internal thread, so the bolt or rod comes out and goes back in while the anchor stays put. Pick the drop-in by location: zinc plated for dry, 304 stainless for wet, 316 stainless for submerged and chemical exposure.

  • Bolt or rod is bought separately: a 1/2 inch anchor takes 1/2 inch threaded hardware.
  • Drill bit matches the anchor body, not the bolt: a 1/2 inch drop-in takes a 5/8 inch bit.
  • Bolt goes no deeper than the anchor's thread: 13/16 inch on a 1/2 inch drop-in.
  • The CONFAST Machine Screw Anchor also works in block, and the others are for concrete only.

Fastening into block, brick or weaker concrete

These anchors are made for masonry as well as concrete. Use the CONFAST Double Expansion Anchor or a lag shield where the bolt or lag has to come back out, and the CONFAST 304 Stainless Steel Hex Sleeve Anchor for a nut-and-washer fix in a wet spot.

  • Drill bit matches the anchor body, not the bolt: a 1/2 inch double expansion anchor takes 7/8 inch.
  • Lag screws are bought separately: for wet spots, use hot dip galvanized or stainless.
  • Long shield needs 3-1/2 inches deep on 1/2 inch, Short needs 2 inches: pick by slab depth.
  • Respect edge distance: 4-3/8 inches for a 1/2 inch double expansion anchor.

  • Match the orientation: the vertical anchors are not for wall faces or horizontal runs.
  • The CONFAST 3/8" Threaded Rod Anchor for Concrete, Vertical is for solid concrete, not block or brick.

Strapping conduit and channel to concrete with a hammer

These set with a hammer once the hole is drilled, with no wrench or torque setting, and stay in for good. Use the CONFAST Stainless Steel Hammer Drive Anchor for wet locations and the CONFAST Zinc Plated Split Drive Round Anchor where vibration is present.

  • The fixture stays put: these cannot be backed out once driven.
  • The split drive anchors are rated for concrete only, and the hammer drive anchors also take block.
  • Use a 1/4 inch bit for 1/4 inch anchors, and drill deeper than the anchor is long.
  • The round head needs a 3/8 inch minimum hole through the fixture.

Screwing fixtures straight into concrete or block

The CONFAST Hex Head Concrete Screw cuts its own thread in a drilled hole with no shield or plug, and backs out when the mount comes off. Pick a flat head to sit flush, and the stainless screws, rated for moist locations, for damp or exterior work.

  • In hollow block, land the screw in the web or a filled cell, not the face shell.
  • Flat heads need a countersunk or chamfered hole, or they sit proud.
  • Do not re-drive a screw into the same hole: move over and drill fresh.
  • Drill at least 1/4 inch deeper than the stainless hex screw goes in, so cuttings have room.

Light wall mounts in drywall, block or concrete

In concrete or block, the CONFAST #14-16 Plastic Anchor Kit, w/#14 x 1-1/2" pan head screws comes with screws, and the CONFAST Plastic Ribbed Anchor Kit 263 pcs is anchors only. The CONFAST Plastic Anchor Kit and both #8 self-drilling kits are for drywall only.

  • These are light-duty: structural or heavy loads go on a wedge or sleeve anchor from the sections above.
  • The ribbed kit counts anchors only, so source screws to match the anchor size.
  • Heavy loads such as a TV mount belong on framing, not a drywall anchor.

Questions we get on CONFAST concrete and drywall anchors

Q: Are CONFAST wedge anchors made in the USA for a Buy American job?

A: Country of origin on this line is the US. That is the fact we hold on record; for a federally funded project your submittal will still need the manufacturer's own documentation.

Q: Are these wedge anchors OK outdoors or in wet locations?

A: Yes. The 304 stainless construction and Wet location rating make these suitable for exterior slabs, wash-down areas, and damp interiors where a zinc-plated carbon steel anchor would rust and bleed onto the concrete. For an interior dry mechanical room a plated wedge anchor does the same mechanical job, so the stainless is what you buy when moisture, not load, is the issue.

Q: Can I remove a wedge anchor later if the equipment gets relocated?

A: No, not intact. A wedge anchor is a permanent expansion anchor: the clip flares against the wall of the hole as the nut is tightened and it will not come back out. If the fixture may move, the usual approach is to cut or grind the stud flush and patch, or use a removable option such as a machine screw anchor with a threaded insert instead.

Q: What torque should I tighten a CONFAST stainless wedge anchor to?

A: Installation torque is by diameter: 5 to 10 ft-lbs for 1/4 inch, 25 to 30 ft-lbs for 3/8 inch, 50 to 60 ft-lbs for 1/2 inch, 75 to 90 ft-lbs for 5/8 inch, and 150 to 175 ft-lbs for 3/4 inch. Use a torque wrench rather than an impact gun. Overtightening a stainless wedge anchor can gall the threads or pull the cone past its set.

Q: Should I use a drop-in anchor or a wedge anchor for hanging pipe and strut off a concrete deck?

A: A drop-in is the one to use when you want a flush, internally threaded (female) anchor point you can bolt into and unbolt later, which is why overhead trapeze, strut and hanger rod work uses them. A wedge anchor leaves a stud sticking out of the concrete permanently and can't be removed cleanly. Set the drop-in flush, then thread in rod or a bolt of the right length.

Q: Do I need a setting tool to install these CONFAST drop-in anchors?

A: Yes, and it is not included. A drop-in is set by dropping it in a clean, correctly drilled hole and driving the internal expander plug down with a matching setting punch until the tool shoulders on the anchor lip. Each diameter takes its own setting tool, so if you are buying more than one size, count on a tool per size. Skipping the tool and hammering the bolt will not expand the shell properly.

Q: What drill bit size do I need for a CONFAST drop-in anchor?

A: The bit size is larger than the bolt size, because the hole has to take the anchor body, not the bolt. For the CONFAST zinc plated drop-in anchors: 1/4 inch anchor uses a 3/8 inch bit, 3/8 inch uses 1/2 inch, 1/2 inch uses 5/8 inch, 5/8 inch uses 7/8 inch, and 3/4 inch uses a 1 inch bit. Match those to a carbide hammer-drill bit and drill the hole at least as deep as the minimum embedment.

Q: How tight can I torque a machine screw anchor?

A: 15 in. lbs. maximum. Zamac is a zinc alloy, not steel, so it strips well before a steel anchor would. Snug the fixture down with a hand driver rather than an impact gun.

Q: Is a single expansion anchor the same as a double expansion anchor?

A: They are not interchangeable in application. Single expansion anchors, like the CONFAST unit here, expand at one point and are meant for solid concrete. Double expansion anchors expand along more of the body and are the usual choice for softer or less consistent base material such as brick or block. If your substrate is sound poured concrete, the single expansion version is the one to use, and the published pull-out ratings, 131 lbs at 1/4 inch up to 1825 lbs at 3/4 inch, are based on that.

Q: Can a double expansion anchor be removed later or reused?

A: The bolt comes out, the anchor does not. Backing the bolt out lets you lift the fixture and re-bolt to the same anchor later, which makes these useful for equipment that gets serviced or swapped. The anchor body itself stays expanded in the hole permanently; it cannot be pulled and reset in a new location.

Q: Are the nut and washer included, or do I order those separately?

A: Nothing extra to order. The CONFAST stainless hex sleeve anchor ships as a complete assembly, sleeve, expander, washer and hex nut, all in 304 stainless so you do not create a dissimilar-metal problem at the head. One part number per size gets you the whole fastener.

Q: Do I need an anchor or shield with a CONFAST hex head concrete screw?

A: No sleeve, shield, or plug is needed. These are direct-to-concrete screw anchors, meaning the screw cuts its own threads in a pre-drilled hole in the base material. That also makes them removable, which is why maintenance crews favor them over expansion anchors for temporary or re-serviceable mounts.

Q: How close to the edge of a slab can I set these masonry screws, and how far apart?

A: Minimum edge distance is 2-1/4 inches for the 3/16 inch screws and 3 inches for the 1/4 inch screws. Minimum spacing between anchors is 3 inches for 3/16 inch and 4 inches for 1/4 inch. Going tighter than that risks spalling the concrete and losing the values you designed to.

Q: What kind of base material is the CONFAST 3/8 inch threaded rod anchor meant for?

A: Solid concrete. It's a concrete anchor, sized 1/4 inch x 1-1/2 inch for a prepared hole in a concrete substrate. Hollow block, brick or other masonry is a different anchor selection.

Q: Is this the right anchor for hanging conduit or pipe from wood joists?

A: That is the typical use. It sets in the wood and accepts 3/8 inch all-thread, which is the standard rod size for conduit and pipe hanger drops. CONFAST files it under their electrical department line. Confirm your rod diameter is 3/8 inch before ordering, since the anchor is threaded for that size only.

Q: Can I use CONFAST zinc plated sleeve anchors outdoors or in a wet area?

A: These are rated for dry locations. The zinc plating gives some corrosion resistance for interior commercial and industrial use, but it is not a stainless or hot-dip anchor. For exterior exposure, washdown areas, coastal sites, or anywhere standing moisture is likely, specify a stainless steel sleeve anchor instead.

Q: Is a lag shield removable, or is it a permanent anchor like a wedge anchor?

A: A lag shield is a female anchor, meaning the lag screw threads into it and can be backed out, leaving the shield in the hole. That makes it a good pick for equipment, conduit strut, railings and fixtures that may come off for service. A wedge anchor is a male stud that expands permanently and cannot be reused once set, so if you need to remove and reinstall a fixture, the lag shield is the type you want.
